Transform Your Holiday Leftovers into Delicious Soup Kits

The holiday season often leaves us with an abundance of leftovers. Instead of letting them go to waste, why not turn them into comforting soup kits you can enjoy later or share with others? Our Turkey (or Veggie) Soup Kits are a delightful way to repurpose leftovers into a convenient, ready-to-make meal.

What You'll Need:

  • Jars or Reusable Containers: Clean, sealable jars like mason jars are perfect.

  • Base Ingredients:

    • Grains: Rice, pasta, or lentils.

    • Seasonings: Dried herbs (thyme, rosemary, parsley), salt, pepper, stock cubes or bouillon powder.

  • Optional Ingredients:

    • Proteins: Shredded leftover turkey or chicken.

    • Vegetables: Chopped leftover roasted veggies like carrots, potatoes, or peas.

  • Decorative Materials:

    • Ribbons, twine, labels, and tags for instructions.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  • Prepare Your Containers:

    • Wash and dry your jars thoroughly.

    • Ensure they have tight-fitting lids to keep ingredients fresh.

  • Layer the Dry Ingredients:

    • Bottom Layer: Start with grains or legumes (½ cup rice, pasta, or lentils).

    • Middle Layer: Add dried herbs and spices (1 teaspoon of thyme, parsley, and a pinch of salt and pepper).

    • Top Layer: Place a stock cube or a tablespoon of bouillon powder.

    • Get Creative: Add spices, such as chilli flakes, curry powder, garlic granules

Write the Cooking Instructions:

Create a tag with these instructions:

"To prepare the soup, add the contents of the jar to 4 cups of water or broth in a pot. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 20 minutes until grains are cooked. Stir in your leftover turkey or vegetables during the last 5 minutes of cooking. Enjoy your hearty soup!"
  • Assemble the Kit:

    • Secure the lid tightly on the jar.

    • Attach the instruction tag using ribbon or twine.

    • Decorate the jar with festive stickers or fabric for a personal touch.

  • Storage Tips:

    • If perishable items like meat or vegetables are included, keep them refrigerated and consume them within 2-3 days.

    • Alternatively, omit perishable items from the jar and add them fresh when cooking.

Why You'll Love This Idea:
  • Reduces Food Waste: Makes use of leftovers that might otherwise be discarded.

  • Convenient Meal Prep: Provides a quick meal option for busy days.

  • Great for Gifting: A thoughtful, homemade gift for friends and family.

  • Family-Friendly Activity: Fun to assemble with kids, teaching them about sustainability.
